So last night I finished Thief 2 on Expert difficulty (although I used quicksaves quite a bit) and I have to say WOW, what an amazing game. With the exception of Casing the Joint, every mission in the game is fantastic, especially Angelwatch, Eavesdropping, the Bank, and Sabotage, which has the most oppressive and intimidating level design I have ever seen. The cutscenes, unlike most games, felt like a reward for getting through the levels thanks to great dialogue and music.
I beat Thief Gold on Hard before, but I didn't find most of the levels amazing, some of them I even hated (Thieves' Guild and Return to the Cathedral). It was worth it for The Sword, however, and the story is also as good as the first.
My major complaint with Thief is that half of the time it feels like I'm just exploiting the dumb AI, as fun as that is. This doesn't make the games any less amazing, but it makes me want to see a Thief game with better AI. I hear that Deadly Shadows is linear, but should I still play it just for completion?

I was one of the unfortunate few who never got to play the original Thief and Thief 2, because in the third world country where I reside, PCs weren't common during that thing. I did play the third installment (Deadly Shadows) when it was released, but somehow I never considered playing the first two. Now, with a new Thief game being announced for next year, I'm feeling tempted to go back and play the first two Thief games. I also realized that they're pretty cheap on GOG. I'm not at all a graphics w****e like most people, and I place 100 times more emphasis on solid and enjoyable gameplay, than flashy graphics. Even in that case, I've heard people say that although the Thief games were legendary back in the day, playing them now won't be an enjoyable experience because the gameplay mechanics which were innovative back then have been implemented and improved upon by loads of games down the years, so it might seem outdated. Usually these kind of statements don't bother me much, and I'm almost certain to go ahead and buy them. Still, i wanted to get a final opinion from people here on Gamespot. So are the first two Thief games as enjoyable and satisfying today as they were earlier, for someone who has never played them?
